Weekend Highlights: Raclette, Ice Sculptures, Coffee and the Super Bowl

Hi friends!

As is the case most weekends I’m back at home, the past couple days have been chock-full of good eats (and company). And as per usual, I figured I’d share some of the highlights in case my pictures can provide anyone with an idea or two!

But backing up to Friday real quick. I have a year-long group project and our ultimate objective is to plan a meal event, which will basically function as a “restaurant for a day”. I got lucky and ended up in THE most lovely group and we are planning an Asian Street Food feast and so excited about it! On Friday we had our final test kitchen to make sure our recipes were perfect. Everything was so delish and my group mate Anikka took this picture of the final products – isn’t it gorgeous?!

Friday also included a lecture with a guest professor about food marketing, which made for such an interesting end to the school week. When I made it back to Ottawa my mom and I booked it over to see the ice sculptures at Winterlude – Ottawa’s big annual winter festival. They were still relatively intact considering the unseasonably mild weather we’ve been having and so pretty!

Saturday included a trip to Jak’s Kitchen and this cute little brunch and lunch spot immediately got added to my Ottawa Eats recommendation page. So cozy and so good. My mom and I went splitsies (duh) on the two meals below and left so satisfied.

Josh and I busted out some homework in the afternoon but we had some major light at the end of the tunnel to look forward to: RACLETTE. His family served up a feast of cheese, veggies, bread, potatoes, tofu and meats to grill and it was nothing short of glorious. Such a fun meal to enjoy with people.

I’m pretty sure Josh’s dog Daisy has more personality than I do and she makes me laugh at least every 45 seconds. It’s pretty much impossible to be in a bad mood when she’s around.

DSC_0898

Saturday morning I made a batch of my apple carrot oat muffins. I hate to be like a parent with a favourite child and neglect my other muffin recipes but these ones are sort of in a league of their own.

Josh came to pick me up and I insisted on tying him in my scarf and documenting the occasion. He is just so lucky to get to date me and to take part in these great ideas I have. ha

We had a fair bit of studying to do but treated ourselves to some coffee and paper browsing at one of our favourite places before getting started. Ahhh the little things.

After the homework I met up with all the ladies in my family for a “Superbowl party” which included zero football and all.the.food. Definitely my kind of party. I knew it would be pretty meat-heavy so I brought a little sushi platter, which is one of my favourite go-to veg options in social situations like this one.

DSC_0916

And to bring a bit of happiness to your Monday, I have to share the Valentine my grandma made during craft time at her Nursing Home, addressed to her late twin sister. She is like a little girl again in a lot of ways and this sight just melted my heart. Love her so much!

On that sweet note, I hope that you have such a good week!

Did you do anything exciting over the weekend?

Anything planned this week?

The Weekends You Wish Had No End

HI GUYS! How was your weekend?!

Ahh how my cup runneth over after the past couple days of R&R. Josh came to visit me, and being that most of our social circle is back in Ottawa, it’s almost like we’re on a little island when we spend weekends together here in my little town. We can just relax and eat and relax again (and then eat again) and it’s sort of the best.

We’ve also been having some really mild weather and it’s been so nice to stroll around leisurely. When I woke up on Friday it was snowing big fat beautiful snowflakes so I headed out with my camera and some of my favourite tunes. Serious happy place.

Josh got in at about lunchtime on Saturday and I had this salad ready for us to dig into. This combo has been a recent favourite and if you haven’t tried roasted sweet potatoes in your salad, do it!!

DSC_0595

// sun-dried tomato  // Mary’s Gone Crackers as ‘croutons’

I was somewhat (okay completely) surprised when we sat down to some schoolwork after lunch and stayed focused for almost 5 hours. In hindsight this was pretty much a miracle because usually my maximum time in silence is approximately 4 minutes. (Unless I’m alone. I promise I don’t talk to myself in 4 minute intervals).

DSC_0600

With the studying wrapped up, we got to work on our go-to chunky lentil spaghetti sauce with zucchini and portobellos and served it with spaghetti squash instead of pasta for a change. It was so flavourful!

DSC_0608

We also made these Cheddar Bay Biscuits and this recipe is a winner, folks.

DSC_0613

Candlelight is just good for the soul.

DSC_0617

Post-dinner activities included a couple episodes of The Office. Did you guys know that the whole series is on Netflix now?! My goodness I love this show.

DSC_0620

I got all caught up with my mom over FaceTime on Sunday morning and then it was time for coffee and food.

DSC_0626

I’ve been in such a crêpe mood since Chloe made them for me last week and these bad boys did.the.trick. I followed this recipe and I thought it was such a good idea to strain the batter to remove the lumps that I can never usually get rid of. We had two different toppings (see below) and they were as good as they look.

DSC_0622

left = Sunbutter with dark chocolate melted in + banana
right = butter + cinnamon-sugar + a sprinkle of fresh lemon juice

Josh named this one “Medusa”. Don’t worry if you have to Google that – I did too.

DSC_0630

We took a nice walk around town while we digested. Except not before I got Josh to take some random pictures of me because I like to pretend I’m a model sometimes. The Instagram Husband video may or may not hit a bit close to home for us. ha! He is such a good sport!

DSC_0636

A light lunch came in the form of Vegepate with pita, steamed broccoli and mango. I have this exact same combo embarrassingly often. So many different textures and flavours to nibble on!

DSC_0644

There’s a Starbucks right next to the bus station so I settled in after Josh left to get some work done. Does anyone else happen to love the soy beverages at Starbs?! I’ve never looked up the milk’s ingredient list (nor do I plan to ha) but it sure makes for a tasty latte.

And just like that, the weekend had come and gone. Despite the title of this post, I’m feeling so ready for the busy week ahead. I think allowing ourselves to rest is both wonderful in the moment and so conducive to having lots of energy when things pick back up again.

Did you have a busy or low-key weekend?

What was the best thing you ate?

Hi guys!

It may or may not be my birthday today. Okay I’ll tell you… it is! ha. When I first realized that it would fall on a Monday this year, I thought it was pretty lame. But I’ve decided that Monday birthdays are actually where it’s AT.  Weekends are usually already fun, whereas when else does a Monday include chocolate at breakfast, consumption of your favourite cake and a sleepover with your best friend?!

In other news, it’s officially finals, which comes with pros and cons. Okay well there aren’t actually that many pros and there is one big con: I feel sort of guilty spending time on the blog, which means there may as well be a dagger through my heart. So today I thought I’d just pop in real quick and share a few highlights of my birthday celebrations with my beautiful mom yesterday.

But I should mention that if all goes as planned, you can still expect regular posts in the coming weeks! In fact I’ve got a recipe and workout coming your way, both of which I am very excited about.

Well first things first, she brought me a little sampling of some of her recent Christmas baking and oh myyyyyy.
DSC_1523

How do mothers always seem to know the perfect gifts?!

DSC_1526

DSC_1534.jpg

She also came with a mini tree in tow and I am a bit too excited about. A few feet of fake pine somehow still go such a long way.

DSC_1542

A trip to the gym found its way to the itinerary, where she kindly took pictures of me for aforementioned workout post.

DSC_1585

When night fell (um okay it was actually 4:30 because #daylightsavings), we took a little drive on a hunt for Christmas lights. Such a December favourite of mine!

DSC_1592

And we capped off the night at one of my favourite local restaurants. Full wineglass, full plate and full heart.

This past year was one in which I became more certain that my field of study is so so right for me, fell deeper in love and found a new passion that came with a whole bunch of new friends (BLOGGING).

Feeling extra thankful today for you guys and the joy that this space brings me.

If you feel so inclined to find yourself a piece of cake to help me celebrate today, that sounds like a pretty great idea to me. ha!

Happy Monday guys!

Weekend Highlights: A Happy Whirlwind

Hiii and happy Monday guys!

I am on my way back to Montreal this morning but was home in Ottawa this weekend and got to see so many of my favourite people. Ohhh to have a heart so full.

When I got home on Friday night, we headed out to see a good friend who’s moving to Japan for a few months (!!!) It was a bit of a reunion from our pre-university days and I soaked up every minute.

Drinks with Friends

I am so fond of this human.

The only disappointment of the night was when I ordered a mojito called the Lava Lamp, and it didn’t end up looking anything like a Lava Lamp. False marketing, if you ask me. Ha! I’m totally kidding and it was delicious.

Cocktail and Beer

I headed home to catch up with my family on Saturday  and do a bit of prep for our Sunday morning book club meeting. I really miss cooking with my mom so some afternoon kitchen time was such a treat.

DSC_1223

Mojo is like “Jacklyn… this isn’t my good side”.

DSC_1212

For dinner we had this delicious soup and bread. I consider steaming carbs one of life’s greatest pleasures.

DSC_1240

And then it was time for some glow-in-the-dark mini putt (umm good concept or good concept?!) with two couple friends that we’ve been trying to arrange a triple date with forever. They are two of the world’s cutest pairs and I’m so glad we finally made it happen!

When Sunday rolled around it was book club and I was a bit too excited. I contributed this overnight cinnamon roll recipe to the spread, which is in one of my all-time favourite things to bake. I was totally intimidated by working with yeast the first time but I promise that this recipe is fool-proof!

This meeting was about Justin Trudeau’s book so we felt that he should make an appearance .

Afterwards, Josh and I settled in at one of our favourite coffee spots for some homework. I wrote about 1.5 sentences of my report in the hour we were there. You win some, you lose some.

I am starting to feel the Christmas spirit sneak up on me ever so slightly and sights like this aren’t hurting.

DSC_1277

Does anyone know a name for this tree other than the “tiny red balls” tree? I love them!

DSC_1279

I have a busy week ahead but am so ready for it.

Hope you had a weekend that made your heart and belly feel full.

Did you see anyone you hadn’t seen in awhile?
Are you getting into the Christmas spirit?

Weekend Highlights: Not A Book Was Opened

It’s funny how there’s a certain type of weekend busyness that leaves you feeling like you need 2 more days of weekend to recover, and another that leaves you feeling so alive and ready to get back to the grind. This one was the latter and HOLLA.

I was looking forward to walking through the door when I got into Ottawa on Friday because my parents have been working hard on a few renovations in the family room. There’s still some decorating to do but so far I think they are nailing it!

DSC_1009

I got in pretty late but there was still plenty of time for some beer-drinking with my boyf (I feel like that’s a bit of an annoying word but it’s how my mom and I refer to Josh and I just can’t stop).

Josh L'Autre Oeil

On Saturday morning I made some muffins and got all caught up with my mom. Some dog-cuddling happened too. I feel like I notice her age a bit more each time I come home and it kills me. Why can’t dogs stay puppies forever?!DSC_0923

DSC_0935

My roommate just so happened to be in Ottawa this weekend with her parents and it was so neat to see her out of context. We went for a stroll downtown and for a coffee shop date and I loved every minute of it. She is seriously the sweetest.

DSC_0949

DSC_0951

I was overdue for some good quality time with my grandma and got to spend the afternoon with her. She is back into cartoons with a vengeance and it is the most adorable thing. Also, I think we should all start playing more go fish.

Josh’s grandma (remember her from our trip to Newfoundland?!) was in town and celebrating her 80th. I was so so glad to be around to partake in the dinner festivities. This woman is a rockstar and a half.

Sunday my mom and I had reservations at a breakfast spot that was a little ways away and we were all excited for our mini road-trip. It ended up being the cutest, quaintest little place and the pancakes came in heart shapes so it was declared an annual autumn tradition. Ottawa friends, it was Heart & Soul Cafe in Dunrobin!

Afterwards I got to catch up with this beautiful girl. We went from spending everyday together to only getting the odd weekend visit and I AM NOT A FAN. Needless to say, I savour her company in a big way when I do get to see her.

DSC_1013

For old time’s sake, my parents and I played a round of Yahtzee after dinner with our tea. Somehow I turned 100 when I hit puberty but I am just going with it.

DSC_1023

I got one last visit in with Josh and just like that, another weekend was in the books.

I hope yours was wonderful! What was the best part?
